Review of Calming Your Anxious Mind: How Mindfulness & Compassion Can Free You from Anxiety, Fear, & Panic (Paperback)

October 27, 2009 by psoriasisnaturaltreatment

I bought this book to help me deal with Social Anxiety Disorder, PTSD, and depression.

This book could serve as a nice introduction to mindfulness meditation. The first few chapters detail some of the research that has come out concerning the impact of mindfulness on anxiety and anxiety disorders.

It was rather skimpy on some details; specifically, how one can tie all of this mindfulness into reducing or dealing with anxiety. The author takes up an entire one chapter – one – in dealing with this specifically.

Much of the book’s content can be found in Jon Kabat-Zinn’s wonderful book, “Full Catastrophe Living”, which is also much more detailed.I recommend that the customer look into that book first, and then supplement his reading with this one second.

Review of The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, Fourth Edition (Hardcover)

October 27, 2009 by psoriasisnaturaltreatment

The American Heritage Dictionary is an excellent 1 volume dictionary, complete with the newest words, beautiful colorful design, and over 2,000 pages on all facets of the English language.I will compare this dictionary to the New Oxford American Dictionary (NOAD) as these are the two best 1-volume English dictionaries available.

In my opinion, the NOAD is clearly a better dictionary for reasons listed below.Generally, the NOAD’s entries are longer and more detailed, hence the reader gets more information. The American Heritage definitions are almost too concise (usually too concise for my preference) although many people may prefer the shorter definitions. Each dictionary will have a number of lesser know words (and even some more common words) the other dictionary will not have (especially scientific words, geographical locations, and newer words), so one dictionary is not superior as far as having a significant amount of more entries. It appears to me the NOAD has more entries, but even if it doesn’t, it is still a better dictionary.

Some comparisons of American Heritage Dictionary (2006) to the NOAD (New Oxford American Dictionary)(2004)

-The American Heritage 2,006 pages long A to Z, the NOAD is 1,959 pages A to Z. The American Heritage does not list anywhere that I can see how many entries it has.The NOAD says it has over 250,000 entries. The font of the American Heritage is smaller but it is just as easy to read as the NOAD’s font. The NOAD uses 3 columns per page, the American Heritage uses 2.

-The American Heritage has some newer words not found in NOAD, such as Red state, Blue state, Sudoku, Texas hold’em, but don’t get the idea though this makes it better than the NOAD.Here are some words (some relatively recent) the NOAD has that the American Heritage does not have: macarana (the dance), tamagotchi (the Japanese toy), October Surprise, Hamas (the militant Palestinian group), heat-seeking, (as a missile) tarte Tatin, solid south, spaceship earth.

-The American Heritage is visually more appealing with its 4.000 color pictures complete with a nice design layout.Although the NOAD lacks color, it has many effective illustrations, and it even devotes full pages to maps.

-A big advantage of the American Heritage is that it details some interesting etymological histories of about 400 common words. For instance the American Heritage dictionary gives a 13-line history on the word Kangaroo, explaining that it is not from an Aborigine meaning “I do not know,” and then proceeds to explain the true history of the word. The American Heritage also has usage notes on over 750 synonyms, 100 notes on regionalisms, 500 notes on usage issues, and 50 notes on the social dimensions of some words.

-Although the NOAD does not give these selected, interesting word histories, overall the NOAD etymology is done much better than the American Heritage’s etymology. The NOAD’s etymological explanations are consistently more detailed, and it will frequently add a time frame when the word came into use, e.g. early 17th century (although it will not give specific years), something the American Heritage does not.The NOAD will give folk etymology of some words, and like the American Heritage will give notes on proper usage and help the reader/writer use the right word with synonyms.

-One huge advantage the NOAD has over the American Heritage is that it adds many, many more common word phrase origins associated with a word, including proverbs, clichés, etc.For instance the word `pie” n. the NOAD will list the phrases “as easy as pie” “as sweet as pie” “a slice of the pie” and “pie in the sky” (and giving definitions of each phrase) while the American Heritage just lists and defines “pie in the sky.”The NOAD will also give the origin of a few phrases such as “flash in the pan” (from the failure of gunpowder to ignite properly to fire a gun). The American Heritage does none of this with its phrases, but note that the American Heritage Dictionary publishes a separate book on word phrase origins, which is probably the reason it places little emphasis on them in its main dictionary.

-The NOAD is superior in the biographical entries to the American Heritage. Each dictionary will have some people the other will not, but when they are similar, the NOAD almost always gives more information in a biographical entry. The NOAD is also superior in geographical entries.food entries, and political terms. The NOAD is also better at including entries one would normally find in an encyclopedia, for instance Tamil Tigers, Hammond Organ, Abby Road are in the NOAD, but not in the American Heritage.

-The NOAD is slightly better in giving information about nations of the world. The American Heritage’s entries on nations is short and very basic, while the NOAD’s, though not much longer, it will nevertheless give a better history of a country than the American Heritage will.

I love dictionaries, and in comparing these two dictionaries, the NOAD to me has its pulse on the English language more than the American Heritage. The American Heritage Dictionary however is still very good choice, but if I could take only one, it would be the NOAD.If you love words, you should get both to enjoy the variety each provides.

Review of Seven Weeks to Sobriety: The Proven Program to Fight Alcoholism through Nutrition (Paperback)

October 27, 2009 by psoriasisnaturaltreatment

I have often wondered what we as AA have to offer a detoxing newcomerother than “let go and let God”, only to watch them get drunkbefore the night is over. Then we sit back and say “he isn’tready” or “she can’t get honest”. Larsons book opens manypossibilities for AA and others to explore, and takes James Millam’s book”Under The Influence” to a new level. I believe the conventionaltreatment industry and AA is going to be slow to try a new approach, evenwith thier dismal success rates, but Larson may have opened the door alittle wider. This book is definatly worth a read, if at the very least, only to educate yourself as to some of the physical aspects of alcoholism, and at the very most, a working sobriety and knowledge to share withothers. The only criticism I have is some of her dubious statistics, and her failure to offer sources for many of her nutrients other than herfacility. I imagine that a practicing alcoholic could get frustrated goingstore to store trying to collect the numerous supplements, and a simpleguide would go a long way in helping someone find these things. I hope thatfuture authors will take the idea further. Perhaps it is time we began totake the treatment of alcoholism out of the 1930’s.

Review of The Gluten Connection: How Gluten Sensitivity May Be Sabotaging Your Health–And What You Can Do to Take Control Now (Paperback)

October 26, 2009 by psoriasisnaturaltreatment

The Gluten Connection is by far the most important book I have ever read.If you are gluten sensitive, it will change your life; if you are not, it will apply to someone you know. The message gets through that 30% of the population is sensitive to gluten and that the smallest amount of it results in symptoms. In my case, after 3 days of gluten-free existence, the allergies that have plagued me for 30 years disappeared entirely and the muscle tightness that has made me miserable lately was gone as well.I will be eternally grateful to the author for writing this book.Susan Hildebran

Product Description
One of the nation’s top clinical nutritionists presents her 14-day program for treating and reversing gluten sensitivity, a condition that affects as much as 35 to 50 percent of the U.S. population and is a major contributing factor to an array of chronic illnesses

Struggling with weight gain? Plagued by fatigue? Suffering from joint pain? According to preeminent clinical nutritionist Dr. Shari Lieberman, these symptoms are among the hallmarks of a little-known but surprisingly common sensitivity to gluten, a protein in certain grains. Dr. Lieberman has been investigating gluten sensitivity for more than 20 years. In her experience, eliminating gluten can alleviate many troubling symptoms for which doctors often can’t find a cause, as well as chronic conditions for which mainstream medicine offers little hope of relief-including rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, psoriasis, fibromyalgia, lupus, and irritable bowel syndrome.

In fact, 85 percent of Dr. Lieberman’s clients who follow a gluten-free diet report dramatic improvement in their health-and scientific studies support her results.

In The Gluten Connection, Dr. Lieberman presents a simple questionnaire to help readers assess their risk for gluten sensitivity and provides a 14-day eating plan to start them on the path to improved health and vitality. She also recommends nutritional supplements to support and maximize the therapeutic potential of a gluten-free diet.

About the Author
SHARI LIEBERMAN, PhD, CNS, is a well-known, widely respected clinical nutritionist who is an expert in identifying and treating gluten sensitivity. She is the author of several books, including the best-selling Real Vitamin and Mineral Book, released in its third edition in 2003. Review of Building Emotional Intelligence: Techniques to Cultivate Inner Strength in Children [ILLUSTRATED] (Hardcover)

October 26, 2009 by psoriasisnaturaltreatment

As an elementary school counselor for over twenty years I have been looking for effective resources to share with students, parents and teachers that are practical and support the teaching of foundational self-regulation skills. Building Emotional Intelligence is the perfect developmental guide for both educators and parents in this respect, as it is very user-friendly and easy to implement with children of all ages.

The chapters are arranged in developmental stages and clearly describe simple activities appropriate for each school age. The actitivies are also provided in the accompanying CD, which is an ingenious way to support their intended application. My students have been loving the self-calming and focusing exercises on the CD, which have stimulated meaningful discussion. After doing one of the listening exercises on the CD this week, one kindergartener said,’When I feel lonely, I listen to my heart beat and then I know I’m not alone’. A guidance counselor couldn’t ask for a more engaged outcome.

Our goal is to share this book with as many teachers and parents in our area as possible. One of our esteemed parents has said about it, ‘This could change the world!’. Thank you, Linda, for this much-needed inner, as well as outer, peace tool.

Product Description
What’s the most important piece of your child’s educational program? If you think it’s math, science, or grammar, you might be overlooking an element that is fast becoming essential in today’s stressful world: cultivating inner resiliency. In Building Emotional Intelligence, pioneering educator Linda Lantieri joins forces with internationally renowned psychologist Daniel Goleman to offer a breakthrough guide for helping children quiet their minds, calm their bodies, and identify and manage their emotions. With Building Emotional Intelligence, parents, teachers, and caregivers have the tools necessary to help build these invaluable skills in the children they raise.

Review of Rainbow Green Live-Food Cuisine (Paperback)

October 26, 2009 by psoriasisnaturaltreatment

I normally don’t write reviews at all, but this book certainly deserves one. The highlights:

* It doesn’t consists of all these sweet recipes but has great tasting alternatives (I could never get into all that sweet stuff); there are no dates, bananas, etc., and there are some good explanations as to why
* The recipes don’t require a lot of strange ingredients of which I never even heard before; ingredients are easily found
* You don’t have to plan days ahead of time to just produce one dish; a lot of it can be put together quickly
* It does have its share of nuts, but for some reason I don’t resent that here as I did in most of my other books; they don’t seem to be everywhere
* There are NO wheat recipes (yeah!); I’m terribly allergic to that… Instead there are lots of recipes with flax seeds, and there is a very good explanation as to why wheat/grains are not used.

I ordered two other books at the same time I got this one and I already owned two raw food books, but this one is the only one I use. The recipes appeal to me much more than the ones in the other books. There still are tools that are necessary for the raw food kitchen, like a dehydrator, juicer, high-speed blender, etc., but there is a section in the beginning that outlines which ones they recommend.
